Maria Ionico completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1993, a Master in Fine Arts at the College of Fine Arts, University of New South Wales in 1996 and a Graduate Diploma in Education at ACU. Maria also completeed a research course in Italy at the Academia Di Belle Arte, Brera.

Along with this Ionico has been awarded many prizes, scholarships and grants which include, Dysan Bequests from the Art Gallery of NSW, The Frederick May Foundation Scholarship from the NSW Ministry for the Arts and Sydney University, The Italian Governement Scholarship, Australia Council Development Grant- Milan studio Residencyand Notably the prestigious Helen Lempriere Travelling Art Scholarship awarded by the NSW Ministry for the Arts. 

Ionico was invited to participate in the prestigious Fondazione Ratti Advanced Course in Visual Arts under the guidence of American artist Haim Steinbach. Most recently she was awarded the Parramatta Artist Fellowship to London. In 2010 Ionico took up a residency at Artspace, Wooloomoloo and presented a project show at Gallery Grantpirrie. She was also shortlisted for the Georges Mora Foundation Fellowship, the Blake Prize, Woollahra Small Sculpture Prize and Fishers Ghost Open Prize.
